Yeah, it’s pretty wild. There are tons of old internet videos out there — and I guess there’s even a Hulu show now?
Some of the other Asian shows mentioned in the thread are actually pretty legit, though. I dropped a few links in the comments under MotherHood if anyone wants to check them out.
I remember watching old internet videos about it when I was a kid. Looking back now, it was seriously messed up.
That said, I actually kind of like the Korean style of reality TV. It’s endearing to see celebrities get embarrassed — not humiliated, just reacting the way anyone would when asked to do something absurd, like stuff their head into a rubber glove or whatever.
It’s kind of sad, though, how hyper-commercialized Korean entertainment has become. A lot of those K-pop groups are completely manufactured — the members usually didn’t meet naturally. There’s this whole industrial complex built around the image, the training, the rollout.
That’s part of why we’ve seen such a huge global push over the last 10 years. It’s not just organic popularity — it’s planned, structured, and backed by a massive machine.
Although my favorite is Running Man. If you follow the storyline from episode to episode, the character arcs are so good. And endearing.
There’s something about Korean humor that’s super self-deprecating — but in a funny, warm way. It’s very self-referential too, like the show knows how ridiculous it is and just leans into it.
Silent library was one of the bits they ran on the show Gaki No Tsukai..
They had a whole series of No laughing chllenges. if you look hard on line you can find subtitled versions of them. THEY ARE SO FUNNY in a twisted way. I think the difference is, is that everyone is in on it. The actors and the audience know whats happening so it make the discomfort funny.
wow, this is wild. I never actually knew the full story!
She’s BAAACKK!

It’s definitely massive, impressive how much they can produce.
I like some K dramas, but I haven’t watched any lately.
I always enjoyed the Japanese reality TV. Like Silent Library 😂
